Community engagement and creative learning with children from underserved communities in Delhi.
Behind Sanskriti School, Umang opens its doors each afternoon to children from nearby slum communities who attend government schools in the morning. The center provides a space where learning extends beyond the classroom, offering mentorship, creativity, and support in a nurturing environment.
During my time volunteering at Umang, I helped facilitate lessons in basic English, storytelling, and creative expression, working with children to explore language through verbs, nouns, and adjectives while encouraging curiosity and confidence.
SOCIAL IMPACT
Learning at Umang takes many forms. Through music, games, and crafts, the children transform everyday materials into handmade objects such as block-printed diary covers and bookmarks that are later sold during the center’s annual day celebration.
The center also supports a women’s self-help group, where local women contribute through knitting and crochet work, creating an additional source of income while strengthening the community.
Volunteering at Umang became a joyful exchange of learning and creativity. While I shared lessons and activities, I was equally inspired by the children’s imagination, talent, and resilience.
A reminder that education is not only about classrooms—but about opportunity, creativity, and community.
